About Us

About People First of Nova Scotia

People First of Nova Scotia (PFNS) is a non-profit organization led by people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

We believe in "Nothing About Us Without Us." This means people should be included in decisions that affect their lives.

🌟 Our Vision

A Nova Scotia where people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are respected, included, and have the same rights and opportunities as everyone else.

What We Do

🗣️ Help People Speak Up

We help people find their voice, share their experiences, and speak up for themselves.

🏠 Support Community Living

We believe people should live, work, and be part of their communities. Everyone deserves the chance to belong.

🤝 Promote Inclusion

We help communities, organizations, and businesses learn how to be more welcoming and inclusive.

💙 Advocate for Change

We work with partners and the government to improve housing, supports, services, and opportunities for people with disabilities.

Our
History

Our History

1985
The first People First group in Nova Scotia started in the Halifax-Dartmouth area.

1986
Members created a Workers Council. They spoke up for better treatment and fair pay for people working in sheltered workshops.

1989
People First Nova Scotia officially began. Local chapters from across the province came together to work as one organization.

1990s to 2010s
Members and advocates worked hard to end segregation and promote inclusion. They partnered with other organizations to help close large institutions and sheltered workshops so people could live, work, and participate in their communities.

2023
After many years of advocacy, Nova Scotia reached a historic human rights agreement. This agreement supports more community-based services and helps people with disabilities have greater choice, inclusion, and independence.
Today

People First Nova Scotia continues to speak up for the rights of people with intellectual disabilities. We work to build inclusive communities where everyone belongs, has a voice, and can make their own choices. 💙

🎉 Annual Conference

Our annual conference brings members together from across Nova Scotia for learning, leadership, friendship, and fun.

🌈 Disability Pride Events

Celebrate Disability Pride with flag raisings, community events, parades, and activities that promote inclusion and self-advocacy.
